The English Department at the High School for Environmental Studies offers students comprehensive instruction in reading, writing, and literacy skills. With curriculum anchored in the Common Core Learning Standards, teachers work with students on developing personalized goals, targeted to preparing students for success in college and careers. In addition, students are given support for SAT preparation, college admissions essays, and for writing a senior thesis, a requirement for graduation for all students. Honors courses are offered at every level, including Advanced Placement English Language and Composition in junior year and Advanced Placement English Literature in senior year. Through a partnership with SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, the school offers an Environmental Literature class, providing students with an opportunity to earn college credits upon completion of this year-long course.
