Principal's Message

Welcome to the High School for Environmental Studies (HSES), the first school of its kind in the nation. HSES opened its doors in 1992 with 150 ninth graders and has grown over the years to this year’s number of approximately 1,350 students from grades 9-12. We pride ourselves not only on our environmental focus, but on providing each of our students with a rigorous, yet supportive atmosphere that prepares them for college and their careers. HSES' combination of high academic standards, unique environmental course work and hands-on service learning programs give students every opportunity to succeed. In fact, last year, 98.3% of our students out of 83.5% who graduated went on to college.

The school maintains a partnership with The Friends of HSES, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing the students of HSES with the opportunity to learn about the environment and environmental careers while pursuing a rigorous college preparatory program. Through this partnership, HSES is able to offer its students unique opportunities for learning about the environment through internships, guest speakers, summer programs, and career advisory support.

HSES has many exceptional facilities that enhance our students’ educational experience. In addition to SMARTBoards in many classrooms, we have wireless internet and full access to wireless laptops for all students in classrooms. Our full-sized gymnasium serves as not only a place for physical education, but as a home to our numerous city- and state-ranked sports teams. Students can take classes in our weight room or our yoga/dance room or study and work on research projects in our new state-of-the-art library. Science research students have the opportunity to conduct guided independent research in our state-of-the-art science research lab.

In order to fulfill our school’s mission for students to reach high standards of excellence by providing a unique and challenging curriculum, we offer a variety of honors and Advanced Placement courses that students can take throughout their course of study at HSES. We also have an Honors Academy, where participating students take courses designed to prepare them for the twelve different AP courses offered at the school. Seniors also have the opportunity to take Global Environment or Environmental Literature, two college credit-bearing courses devised with SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Finally, to enrich our well-rounded curriculum, we offer art and ceramics course, as well as instrumental and vocal music.

At the High School for Environmental Studies, we work as a school community to ensure the educational needs of your child are met. We are confident that here, your child will be guided through an outstanding educational journey.
